How To Switch Your Tourist Visa To Residency In The UAE

25 June 2026 6 min read

One of the most useful changes in UAE immigration over the past few years is that you no longer need to leave the country to switch from a tourist visa to a residence visa. The process is fully in country, fast and well established. Here is how it works.

The most common residency routes

  • Employment visa — sponsored by a UAE employer (free zone or mainland).
  • Investor or partner visa — for shareholders in a UAE company.
  • Freelancer or self employment visa — through a free zone (DMCC, IFZA, Dubai Internet City, RAKEZ, Twofour54 and others).
  • Property investor visa — for owners of property worth at least AED 750,000 (2 year) or AED 2 million (10 year Golden Visa).
  • Golden Visa — for investors, talents, scientists, top students, doctors and other approved categories.
  • Family sponsorship — for spouse and children of an existing UAE resident.
  • Retirement visa — for those over 55 meeting income or property criteria.

The in country switch (status change)

If you are already in the UAE on a tourist visa and your residency category has been approved, you can pay the status change fee (typically AED 600 to AED 1,200 depending on type) and avoid leaving the country.

Step by step

  1. Get the entry permit — once your employer, free zone or property approval is in place, your sponsor applies for your entry permit through ICP or GDRFA.
  2. Pay the status change — instead of doing a visa run, your typing centre or PRO submits the status change to convert your tourist status into the entry permit status.
  3. Medical fitness test — visit an authorised medical centre (DHA in Dubai, SEHA in Abu Dhabi) for the chest x ray and blood test.
  4. Emirates ID biometrics — biometrics are usually captured at the medical centre or a dedicated ICP centre.
  5. Visa stamping (electronic) — most residence visas are now electronic and emailed as PDFs.
  6. Emirates ID collection — your Emirates ID is delivered by Emirates Post within 5 to 15 working days.

Typical timeline

  • Free zone employment or freelance visa: 5 to 10 working days end to end.
  • Property investor visa: 10 to 20 working days, depending on title deed verification.
  • Golden Visa: 15 to 45 working days, depending on the route.

Common pitfalls

  • Letting your tourist visa expire before completing the status change (fines apply).
  • Not having an Ejari or title deed ready if you are sponsoring family.
  • Using unlicensed PRO services; always go through your employer, free zone or a licensed typing centre.

Cost

The total cost typically lands between AED 3,500 and AED 8,000 for an in country switch, depending on free zone, visa term (2 or 3 years) and any dependants.

If you want help selecting the right residency route based on your work and family setup, we can introduce vetted PROs and free zone partners.
