The Best Way To Move Around Dubai In 2026

12 June 2026 7 min read

Dubai is a car-first city by design, but the transport network is now broad enough that most residents combine two or three modes depending on the day. Here is what works in practice in 2026, with real numbers.

The Dubai Metro

Two lines (Red and Green) plus the Route 2020 extension to Expo City. Driverless, fully air-conditioned, and the cheapest way to cross the city.

  • Single journey: AED 3–8.50 depending on zones
  • Monthly Nol Silver pass (any zone): AED 350
  • Hours: roughly 05:00–00:00 Sun–Wed, longer at weekends
  • Best for: commuting along Sheikh Zayed Road (Marina ↔ DIFC ↔ Burj Khalifa ↔ Deira), airport runs (Red Line stops at Terminals 1 and 3)

Gold Class is roughly double the Silver fare and includes leather seating, a quieter cabin and luggage racks.

The Dubai Tram

11.5 km along Al Sufouh Road, connecting JBR, Marina, Media City and Al Sufouh. Integrates with the Red Line at Sobha Realty/DAMAC stations.

  • Fare: AED 3–5 per ride
  • Best for: short hops within the Marina/JBR/Media City triangle

Taxis and ride-hail

Dubai's RTA taxi fleet (cream-coloured) and Careem/Uber e-hail apps overlap heavily.

  • RTA taxi flag fall: AED 12 daytime / AED 14 night, AED 1.96 per km
  • Typical Marina → DIFC: AED 60–85
  • Typical Downtown → DXB Terminal 3: AED 45–65
  • Careem and Uber: similar pricing with surge at peak; Careem Plus subscription (AED 35/month) discounts rides and includes food delivery perks
  • Hala (RTA's own e-hail inside Careem): cheaper than UberX, sometimes 15–20% below taxi meter

Tipping is not required but rounding up is appreciated.

Owning a car

The cheapest long-term option for most residents with a regular commute outside the Metro corridor.

  • Petrol (Special 95): ~AED 3.00/litre (mid-2026 cap)
  • Mid-size SUV monthly running cost: AED 1,800–2,800 (finance, insurance, fuel, Salik, parking)
  • Salik tolls: AED 4 per gate, multiple gates between Marina and Downtown; daily cap removed in 2024 — every passage charges
  • Parking: AED 2–4/hour in metered zones; most residential buildings include 1–2 spaces
  • Driving licence: many countries (UK, EU, US, Canada, GCC, etc.) qualify for a direct swap; otherwise expect AED 5,000–9,000 of lessons and tests

Monthly car rental

For 6–12 month renters or new arrivals, monthly rental is often cheaper than buying.

  • Mid-size SUV (e.g. MG ZS, Nissan Kicks): AED 1,800–2,500/month including insurance
  • Premium SUV (Range Rover Velar, BMW X5): AED 6,000–10,000/month

Chauffeur services

For business visitors or families without a UAE licence, chauffeured hourly hire is a popular middle ground.

  • Hourly chauffeur (saloon): AED 150–250/hour, 3-hour minimum
  • Full-day premium (S-Class, Range Rover): AED 1,500–2,500/day

Water transport

Often overlooked. RTA water taxis, abras and ferries cover Marina, Bluewaters, Dubai Canal, Dubai Creek and Sharjah.

  • Abra across Dubai Creek: AED 1 (the city's cheapest ride)
  • Water taxi Marina → JBR loop: AED 25–75 depending on route
  • Best for: weekend leisure, avoiding Marina traffic at peak hours

Putting it together — three realistic profiles

  • DIFC professional living in Downtown: Metro daily (Nol Silver AED 350/month) + occasional Careem at weekends. Total: AED 600–900/month.
  • Family of four in Arabian Ranches: One private SUV + one monthly rental for the second driver + occasional Careem for teens. Total: AED 6,000–9,000/month all-in.
  • Saadiyat-based investor visiting weekly: Premium hire car or chauffeured Range Rover for the visit (AED 5,000–8,000/week), Metro and Careem for short hops in Dubai.
